Passing the Baton

UPDATE: see next post

As you may have noticed, Mschedule has not been updated for Fall 2007. The main reason is that I don't plan on being here next semester, and don't have a ton of motivation to work on it right now. So... If anyone wants to take on the responsibility of updating Mschedule, let me know. If you just want to keep the data updated, basically, you just have to populate two different MySQL databases with data from the University, which is now in a CSV file. This will be much faster and easier than trying to scrape Wolverine Access. The schedule of classes changes, so this needs to be done at least weekly through scheduling season which includes the summer for freshman. Email mschedule@umich.edu for more info.

how much time does it take? and how much prior programming experience/knowledge is necessary?

The old way of doing things use to take hours, and you had to have a command window open the whole time which was annoying. Now that the University has published a CSV file, someone could write a script which populates the databases which runs in a few seconds and is much less prone to error. So, preious programming experience is probably required to write that script. Also, I'm looking for someone with a more long term interest so this doesn't happen for the next few years.

I've taken eecs 183, basic C++ programming... I've never dealt with MySQL but I have made some experience with MS Access. Would someone with my skills be able to take over the project?

If not, I hope you update MSchedule one more time before you graduate... call it your parting gift to the student body, ha.

I'd love to do it

Hey, I just found your amazing website and used it to create my schedule for last semester. I would really love to continue running the site. Im a freshman and I have previous MySQL, php, java, and c++ programming experience. If you could just send me an email describing the MySQL databases that I would be populating, that would be great. Then all these people offering you sexual favors could be pleased, haha.

Thanks in Advance,

Incentive to keep update MSchedule

Updater / Owner of Mschedule:

Someone pointed this out to me, and I agree with him, you would make a lot of money if you advertised on mschedule.com. With all the people that go to it (as you can see from just these few livejournal comments), companies would be more than willing to give you some money to put their name on your website. Maybe if you were generating some profit from MSchedule.com then you would have some incentive to keep updating. This works for anyone actually: whoever is willing enough to update and keep mschedule running has the chance to really make some profit here.

Re: Incentive to keep update MSchedule

Many people have thought about this, including me. I'm not interested in spending my time approaching local businesses about this. Indeed, local businesses would be the most interested in advertising. But, if you, or anyone else wants to, I'm sure we could work out some profit sharing deal.
